Teachers are always in the room! To the authors, b Teachers are always in the room! To the authors, bookstagrammers, librarians, and educators out there...am I right or am I right?

A well read teacher is a blessing. Thank you all for championing books for yourselves and your students.

Reposted from @iran.hrdc This gave me chills and Reposted from @iran.hrdc

This gave me chills and reminded me why I wrote The Pearl That Broke Its Shell in which Rahima is a bacha posh in her childhood (and then goes on to become a soldier in City of Widows).

The quote at the end of this video is so powerful.

So long as this deep inequality and gender apartheid exists, there will be families choosing to disguise their daughters as sons to give them a sliver of a chance.

This took me so long but worth it! This is post This took me so long but worth it!

This is post 1 of ??? from @bookmarksncfestival this weekend in Winston-Salem. Incredible panels and I'm so thrilled I had the chance to be in these rooms, part of these conversations and on that party bus coming home from a lovely dinner hosted by the very gracious host and fabulous storyteller @charlielovett42 and his family.

Opening remarks by John Green in conversation with Angie Thomas -- I wish everyone could have been there.

I included the book covers because I'm betting that's how most of us would rather have you recognize those than our faces.

Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers and readers for making this magical!

Sitting here with my copy of the Italian translati Sitting here with my copy of the Italian translation of City of Widows, reminiscing about one of my most precious trips to Italy. Back in 2017, I was lucky enough to be invited by the folks at the Center for Peace and had stimulating, humanizing conversations that transcended language and borders. Forever thankful for my time with Martina Dei Cas, Francesco Comina, and Bürgermeister (Mayor) Caramaschi of Bolzano for the bridges built in that trip.

And deeply grateful to Piemme for bringing yet another of my stories to Italian readers, thanks to the talented translation of Lucia Visonà. Your careful work has given this story wings! Grazie mille.
One of my favorite parts of book tour: talking wit One of my favorite parts of book tour: talking with readers and librarians about CITY OF WIDOWS and the extraordinary Afghan women who inspired this story.

Last Friday, I returned to Glen Cove Library in Long Island had the chance to meet new readers as well as reunite with folks who remember my last visit a full decade (!!) ago. Thank you for the chance to talk about City of Widows (which was for some a reunion with Rahima from The Pearl That Broke Its Shell).

I shared the origins of the story - the harrowing experiences of those who fled via the Kabul airport in August of 2021. Having sat with evacuated families, I don't see how one ignores this pain to find a lazy punchline. (I'm looking at you, #bestofthebest on @netflix.)

The conversation was lively and the questions so thoughtful and varied.  What's happening in Afghanistan now? How do you piece together a story with two timelines? What can someone here do to help?

If the world out there feels too bleak, visit a library. They are sanctuaries of empathy, curiosity, and community.
